Data Model Parameters
The Data Model Parameters dialog lets you define dynamic variables used to inject values into the Data Model. Once created, they can act as variables in dynamic calculated columns or be used within column headings. When you open a view, report, dashboard or workbook, the data is dynamically populated based on the parameters set in the Data Model Parameters dialog.
By using Data Model Parameters, you can build more flexible, efficient, and user-driven data models that enhance the overall analysis experience.
When to use Data Model Parameters
- Filtering dynamic data: Use parameters to dynamically filter data within a data model. This allows for real-time adjustments based on user input or predefined criteria.
- Customizing user inputs: Build visualizations that require user-specific input by allowing you to enter your own values, tailoring the output to your needs.
- Enhancing query flexibility: Create adaptable queries that support different inputs without modifying the base query structure. This is especially useful when dealing with complex queries, as it allows greater flexibility.
- Optimizing performance: Reduce the dataset based on specific conditions to improve performance. This helps reduce loading time and resource usage.
- Analyzing different scenarios: Use parameters to test different conditions or values and compare the outcomes. This allows for quick adjustments without altering the underlying data model.
How to use Data Model Parameters
-
Open a visualization:
- Choose from the Views, Reports, Dashboards, or Workbooks tab, find your visualization, and click to open it.
-
Display the Data Model Parameters:
- If any columns in the visualization use a data model parameter, the dialog appears automatically when the visualization opens.
- It lists the parameters required by the fields used in the visualization.
-
Apply filters:
- Parameters: View the list of parameters needed to fetch data for the fields in the visualization based on the data model used. Options may include date ranges, specific categories, or other parameters.
- Input Values: Enter specific values for each parameter that meet the required criteria. A prompt may appear beside each input to guide you on acceptable values.
-
Load the visualization:
- After confirming your values, select Confirm to apply them, or Skip to use the default values.
- The visualization loads based on your selected criteria.
